These are HD video samples from Windows, manipulated by free software tools available in the Lenny version of Debian. The original was given to me by Walter Scott. It is a Windows captured DV AVI that has members of Star One Delta saying their name. It is followed by copies exported from Kino and transcoded by ffmpeg2theora.
The DV Copies were all about the same. Those that played were visually indistinguishable and all were about the same size, between 5.8 and 6.5 MB.
Theora was also very close visually but enjoyed 15 fold size reduction to 400 KB.
When working with Kino, the best DV export is raw. This is the smallest format because they lack a container and it's what Kino works with naively. Walter says that type 2 is best for Windows people and that format played well.
Theora is a surprisingly good format for transport and playback, given a good quality original.
Perversely, I was not able to play all of these exported file formats with free software. That's OK by me because the original is best for editing and Kino ate it up.
