Nothing. Most modern distros do all the work for you. Debian's older installer tells you what to do. Mepis, Fedora, Red Hat and Suse all have a button you can press to get the job done. The scripts work and you typically get back your old operating system on boot. Feather Linux and Smoothwall don't not even bother to ask you, they destructively install over whatever you have.
