Introduction

This lecture covers common image programs available in Debian Woody, Debian Sarge and Mepis. These include tools for browsing collections, cameras and scanner interfaces, photo manipulation, image creation and typesetting that rival commercial offerings. Only programs that are offically part of the distributions will be covered here.

Everyone loves pretty pictures and images are fundamental to what computers do. When you get past communications, records keeping and funny noises, images are what computers do for us. GUIs don't work without pictures and images are vital to communications.

Because images are so fundamental to what computers do there are many free programs for creating them. If all you ever needed was JASC's Paint Shop Pro, you won't be disapointed by the average Linux distribution. The same basic tools have been modified and used by the makers of Scooby Doo, Hary Potter and Planet of the Apes. This presentation is arranged by class of image program with version information, where applicable. In general, the newer versions of each program have significant improvements, though older versions work on lighter hardware and are still more than adequate for use. The classes of programs covered are:

The programs in each class will be demonstrated live and with screenshots. Some programs serve more than one purpose. They are placed by their most excellent feature.
